Trawling through the tweets, articles and blogs surrounding Mobile World Congress this year several strong themes seem to be emerging, from the need for improved user Quality of Experience, to small cells and the challenge to deploy LTE networks quickly and cost effectively.

We will once again be at the event joining other industry leaders in these discussions. Our CTO, Dr John Naylon, will also be presenting on the energy efficiency challenges facing operators when deploying their networks.

In the part 1 and 2 of 'Green is the new black' we took a ‘cradle-to-grave’ look at the life-cycle of a point-to-multipoint (PMP) network built using CBNL’s VectaStar equipment.

After deployment, compared with alternative backhaul methods, PMP can result in a huge reduction in equipment requirements and therefore significant savings in energy and a reduction in power consumption as a result.

At each stage of the life-cycle, PMP, and more specifically, VectaStar, can be seen to have a positive impact on the environment compared to alternative backhaul methods.

But when the equipment reaches the end of its life, what happens then?

There are many challenges facing the world’s mobile operators, as increasing data capacity expectations continue to drive bandwidth demands of the world’s mobile operators.

These demands have to be met quickly and reliably at low-cost if operators wish to succeed in this ever-competitive marketplace, but this isn’t the only challenge in today’s market.

Increasingly the economic and regulatory pressures that have traditionally set the pace for telecoms advancements have been joined by a new wave of environmental concerns.

Did you know that every day in the U.S. enough rubbish is produced to equal the weight of the Empire State Building?

And London alone currently generates around 44 million tonnes of carbon per year?

These are the sorts of statistics we are continually bombarded with, as the world becomes more environmentally aware.

Rising carbon taxes, social pressures and steep political-driven targets to slash emissions have placed the ‘Green’ issue at the forefront of product developers minds all over the globe.

When considering the rapid evolution of mobile networks, it is imperative that providers do not lose sight of the environmental and CSR issues that operators face, while expanding networks to successfully cope with the rapid increase in demand for capacity.
